With Christmas around the corner, the last thing you want is to be bogged down with boiler troubles as you’re building up to the big day. Especially as the temperature starts to drop in the next few weeks, not only will your home’s heating systems be under more pressure to keep everyone cosy, but the weather can also affect other areas of your home.
Luckily, it’s easy to prevent with some simple checks.
1. Service your boiler early
The number one priority should be servicing your boiler as soon as possible. It works hardest in winter and can make or break the season, so make sure it’s ready for the extra work it will be taking on. An annual service by a qualified engineer keeps it efficient and safe, plus a serviced boiler uses less energy and reduces the risk of breakdowns during cold spells.

2. Insulate your pipes before they freeze
Frozen pipes are one of the biggest winter headaches for homeowners. When water freezes inside pipes, it expands and can cause cracks or bursts. A small investment in pipe insulation can save hundreds in repair costs later.
3. Clear gutters and drains
Leaves and debris build up in gutters during autumn and when the cold comes knocking and water freezes, blockages and leaks will follow. So, make sure you clean out your gutters and drains before the frost hits.
4. Avoid kitchen drain disasters
It’s the season for gathering family, friends and making delicious food to celebrate together, but don’t forget that fat, grease, and food scraps harden when cold which can lead to clogging up pipes. Avoid pouring oil or grease down the sink and remember to run cold water before and after using a waste disposal unit if you have one.
5. Know what to do if pipes freeze
If no water comes from your tap, your pipes might be frozen. The first point of call if you think that your pipes are frozen is to turn off the main water supply and open nearby taps to relieve pressure. Each frozen section will need to be warmed up gently – you can do this with a hairdryer or warm towels. If you can't locate or safely thaw the freeze, call a qualified plumber to help fix the problem before it gets worse.
A few hours of prep now could save you hundreds in repairs later and a lot of stress over the holidays.
