Outdoor Electrics & Summer Plumbing Tips For Your Business: Stay Safe & Efficient This Season

The summer season is here, which means we can finally enjoy more of our outdoor areas.

From al fresco dining to networking events, fundraisers, team days, and conferences, businesses across hospitality and events are shifting their focus outdoors. But as more customers flood in to your venue, increased use brings added pressure on your external electrics and plumbing. Whether you manage a venue, corporate event space, pub garden, or café, maintaining your outdoor infrastructure is essential to avoid costly repairs, safety risks, or service interruptions.

Here’s how to prepare and risk-assess your outdoor spaces for a safe and successful summer.

1. Check your Seals

Leaky outdoor taps and worn hose fittings can waste hundreds of litres of water every week, creating a safety risk as well as losing you money in the meantime. Make time to inspect seals regularly, especially if connections look corroded, loose, or you’ve noticed any dripping, so it doesn’t cause a more serious safety risk on site.

2. Watch For Pipe Stress in Heat

Rising temperatures can cause outdoor pipes to expand, which can lead to cracks, joint damage, or in the worst-case scenario, burst pipes. If you spot drips or water gathering around fixtures, investigate early before the problem escalates. Even if it turns out to be an easy fix, acting quickly will save you from bigger leaks down the line.

3. Weatherproof your Outdoor Sockets

Although we all wish for endless sun, it can never be sure that we can fully avoid a shower or two in the summer and in busy venues and events there’s always a risk that sockets could get wet or damaged through spillages or accidents. So, it’s important to use dedicated, weatherproofed outlets with covers to prevent accidents and keep a safe and functional outdoor space to protect your equipment, team and customers.

 4. Don’t Overload Outlets

Remember, it’s not just about protecting sockets from water. Whether you’re running sound systems, heaters, outdoor fridges and bars, or powering aesthetic outdoor lighting and heating features, overloaded sockets can cause overheating and fire risks. This simple habit can save energy, extend the life of your equipment, and protect your outdoor areas. Always unplug devices and appliances during off-hours to reduce heat build-up and risk.

 5. Unblock Drains and Gutters

If your venue’s gutters haven’t been cleared since winter, now is the time to ensure smooth service throughout the summer months. Blocked systems can cause pooling, unpleasant smells, or even flooding, which is particularly risky near customer walkways or outdoor kitchens.

For any venue, safety isn’t optional. It’s a priority.

Regular maintenance of plumbing and electrics reduces the risk of injury, protects your reputation, and keeps operations running smoothly.
